Please prove just how smart you are by helping me bring 'sound' back to
my grandson's ageing Dell P69G Inspiron 13-5368 laptop.

It currently has Linux MX fully installed installed; it is up and
running and connected to the Internet via a wireless connection.

The only sound when playing a music video is a 'tick-tock' noise like a
grandfather clock.

Thanks.

What are your current strategies for further diagnostic efforts?

- if there is a currently 'Ventoyed' USB stick to copy the Hirens PE
for live W11
- partitioning its drive to also accept a W11 install
- checking its headphone/headset port
- connecting an HDMI device such as monitor or TV which has sound to
its HDMI 1.4b port

What did I predict him to do with all your 'help'?

Quite right, ignore it.

Why did he ignore it?

Because as I've stated elsewhere, you are a droid and have no idea how
to correctly judge your audience (technically or otherwise).

And, installing Win /after/ a linux install (instead of the more
commonly employed other-way-around) is a little trickier than the other,
but the Ventoy can be helpful for that as well, such as described in
this article:

https://itsfoss.com/install-windows-after-ubuntu-dual-boot/
Post by Mike Easter
How to Install Windows After Ubuntu Linux in Dual Boot
Your LM install is functionally the same as an Ub.

The article uses the Ventoy for /both/ the MS .iso for the install AND a
linux .iso for a live boot to use as part of the strategy (instead of
the installed LM which will be mounted).

Also, don't forget that the Ventoyed USB stick + the Hirens PE is also a
strategy to update the BIOS/UEFI to the one for your device discussed in
another thread. That makes 3 or more good reasons to successfully
finish making the Ventoy.

It becomes an essential step for those troubleshooting branches.

If it was mine, I would try Puppy Linux which often supports older
units. If sound works, it proves the speakers aren't blown. I don't
know if one could then snatch a driver from there to use with the more
modern OS.

Good thoughts. Thanks. Also why I suggested using other hardware -- make sure
the speakers are OK.

Snit. Must you insert yourself into every single thread posted?
Seeing as you don't have enough technical skills to contribute, why must
you clog the thread with your bullshit?

This one really describes you snit.

Now I'm reading some useful troubleshooting command stuff in the Arch
forum. There are some very knowledgeable arch users.

Your API is Alsa; well, was ALSA when you last posted a full inxi on LM
22. That info also said that your device was Sunrise Point-LP HD Audio
and the driver was snd_hda_intel.

In the Arch problem thread about that same device, an alsa command
showed that it didn't see the device. That command might show you/us a
'different point of view' than did inxi.

aplay -l

There are 3 convenient ways to run a terminal command in MX; you can
open the terminal from the L-oriented taskbar which is a black icon w/ a
command prompt graphic, or you can open the terminal from the menu in
the System family, or you can open the terminal from the keyboard
shortcut by pressing all 3 keys ctrl-alt-T, which for me is
ergonomically easier because I enable sticky keys.

In the case of the Arch user, when he commanded aplay -l (that's a lower
case L) it said that there were no sound cards, which was not correct.

Agree.
The Arch group has some very knowledgeable users and they seem willing to help
out others who are not using the Arch platform.
